Building Community Partners
In preparation for their project, instructors sent their students to informational sessions on Diabetes research conducted by the Silicon Valley American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Dr. Peter H. Hwang of Stanford University Medical Center and media mentoring sessions with iHeart Media of San Francisco. Instructors then met with students weekly to coach them through the exercise of developing impactful storylines that will educate their local community about pertinent health concerns. With health education as a primary program objective, many participants are now committed to being communal health advocates by promoting dietary shifts, consumption of locally sourced foods, and regular exercise. The Foundation is seeking to sustain and grow this annual multi-year health awareness program for our students to become a new generation of medical professionals, storytellers, and change agents for the Latino community.
